যেন জাদুমন্ত্র জানে আমাদের ধানখেতের আলে, খালেবিলে, পুকুরে, নদীতে থাকা ম্যাজিশিয়ান এই মাছটি। অনেকে চিনেন আবার অনেকে নামও জানেন না মাছটির। এই মাছটির নাম জেব্রা ফিশ। এর শক্তি সম্পর্কে জানলে আপনি রীতিমতো অবাক হবেন। মূলত গ্রাম বাংলা আর উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারতের নদী, পুকুর, খালবিলে এই জেব্রা ফিশটি পাওয়া যায়।

হাতের আঙুলের আকারের ও গায়ে ডোরাকাটা দাগের এই মাছটি ক্ষতবিক্ষত হওয়ার পরেও মস্তিষ্ক, হৃদযন্ত্র, যকৃত, অগ্ন্যাশয়, মেরুদণ্ডসহ তার শরীরের প্রায় সবকটি অঙ্গকে নতুন করে গড়ে তুলতে পারে। যা মানুষ কিংবা কোনও স্তন্যপায়ী প্রাণীও পারে না।

ভারতের পুনের আগরকর রিসার্চ ইন্সটিটিউটের ডেভেলপমেন্টাল বায়োলজি বিভাগের বিজ্ঞানী চিন্ময় পাত্রের তত্ত্বাবধানে আমাদের দুর্বল হয়ে পড়া হৃদযন্ত্রকে ফের জাগিয়ে তোলার এই সঞ্জীবনী মন্ত্রটি খুঁজে বের করেছেন দেবাঞ্জন মুখোপাধ্যায় ও তার সহযোগীরা। দেবাঞ্জন এখন ফ্রাঙ্কফুর্টে গোথে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইন্সটিটিউট ফর কার্ডিওভাসকুলার রিজেনারেশনের গবেষক।

চিন্ময় ও দেবাঞ্জনসহ ১০ জনের গবেষকদল পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষার মাধ্যমে বিশ্বে এই প্রথম দেখালেন, একটি বিশেষ জিন কীভাবে জেব্রা ফিশের ক্ষতবিক্ষত হৃদযন্ত্রকে (‘মায়োকার্ডিয়াল ইনজুরি’) পুনরুজ্জীবিত হয়ে উঠতে সাহায্য করে। জিনটির নাম- ‘কানেকটিভ টিস্যু গ্রোথ ফ্যাক্টর (সিটিজিএফ)’। আরও একটি নাম রয়েছে জিনটির, তাহলো ‘সেলুলার কমিউনিকেশন নেটওয়ার্ক ফ্যাক্টর ২-এ’।

এই গবেষণাতেই প্রথম বোঝা গেল কেন হার্ট অ্যাটাকের পর আমরা আর হৃদযন্ত্রকে আগের অবস্থায় ফিরে পাই না এবং তৃতীয়বার হার্ট অ্যাটাকের পর অনিবার্যই হয়ে ওঠে আমাদের মৃত্যু। আর কেনই বা জেব্রা ফিশের হৃদযন্ত্র বার বার ক্ষতবিক্ষত হয়েও পুনরুজ্জীবিত হয়ে উঠতে পারে প্রায় নতুন হৃদযন্ত্রের মতোই?

গবেষণাপত্রটি প্রকাশিত হয়েছে ব্রিটেন থেকে প্রকাশিত আন্তর্জাতিক বিজ্ঞান-জার্নাল ‘ডেভেলপমেন্ট’-এ। মূল গবেষক দেবাঞ্জন কাজ করেছেন পুনের ‘আগরকর রিসার্চ ইন্সটিটিউট (এআরআই)’-এর ডেভেলপমেন্টাল বায়োলজি বিভাগের সহযোগী অধ্যাপক চিন্ময় পাত্রের তত্ত্বাবধানে। সহযোগিতা করেছে জার্মানির ‘ম্যাক্স প্ল্যাঙ্ক ইন্সটিটিউট ফর হার্ট অ্যান্ড লাং রিসার্চ’ এবং আমেরিকার ডারহ্যামের ‘ডিউক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়’-এর মেডিক্যাল সেন্টারও।

গবেষণায় কেন বেছে নেওয়া হলো জেব্রা ফিশ?
সাধারণত ২ থেকে ৩ বছর জেব্রা ফিশ বেঁচে থাকে। তাই ৩ মাস বয়স হয়ে গেলেই এই মাছ প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক হয়ে ওঠে। গবেষকরা কাজটা করেছেন অন্তত ৬ মাস বয়সি জেব্রা ফিশ নিয়ে। সেগুলো ছিল প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক জেব্রা ফিশ। হার্ট অ্যাটাকের ঘটনা ও আশঙ্কা যেহেতু শিশুদের চেয়ে প্রাপ্তবয়স্কদের মধ্যে বেশি, প্রবীণদের ক্ষেত্রে আরও বেশি, গবেষকরা তাই কাজটা করেছেন প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক জেব্রা ফিশ নিয়ে।

জেব্রা ফিশ নিয়ে কাজ করার একটা সুবিধা হলো, জন্মের পর ১০-১৫ দিন পর্যন্ত বাইরে থেকেই তাদের হৃদযন্ত্র, যকৃত, অগ্ন্যাশয়সহ শরীরের সবকটি অঙ্গের বিকশিত হয়ে ওঠা আর তাদের কাজকর্ম চাক্ষুষ করা যায়। কীভাবে হৃদযন্ত্রের ভাল্ব তৈরি হচ্ছে, তা-ও দেখা যায়, একেবারে কোষের স্তরে গিয়েও। আর একটা সুবিধা হলো জেব্রা ফিশের বেশির ভাগ কার্যকরী জিনের (প্রাণী বা উদ্ভিদের অনেক জিনই কার্যকরী থাকে না) সঙ্গেই মানুষ ও ইঁদুরের কার্যকরী জিনগুলোর খুব সাদৃশ্য রয়েছে। গত শতাব্দীর ৬-এর দশক থেকেই গ্রাম বাংলার এই ‘ম্যাজিশিয়ান’ মাছটি নিয়ে বিদেশে শুরু হয় গবেষণা। এখন বিশ্বের প্রায় ১ হাজারটি গবেষণাগারে জেব্রা ফিশ নিয়ে গবেষণা চলছে। সূত্র: আনন্দবাজার অনলাইন
